OKLAHOMA CITY – A metro teacher and her students received a surprise Tuesday when the eighth grade teacher found out she was named one of Symetra's top five teachers in the nation. The Capps middle School principal called the teacher, Sylvia Mahaffey, and about 100 students in the cafeteria to discuss a serious issue, then surprised the school by announcing the honor for Mahaffey instead. The students and faculty were also treated to ice cream sandwiches for the occasion.

Mahaffey is an eighth grade math teacher at the metro middle school. The 2010 Symetra Top Teacher program honors five teachers from around the country for outstanding leadership and instructional skills.

Mahaffey said her students just recently lost a classmate and the tragedy made them grow even closer.

"I've tried to be there for them and to encourage them to make something positive out of it and to live each day like it could be our last. But these kids, that's the reason I get up in the morning, for them," said Mahaffey.

Capps Middle School will get a $1,000 donation in Miss Mahaffey's name.
