OKLAHOMA CITY -- An apartment fire late Tuesday night has left several families with no place to call home. It happened in the 400 block of Tinker Diagonal, close to where Interstate 35 and Interstate 40 meet.

Firefighters said the fire started on the upper level and spread quickly through a breezeway where all the exits are located. Residents were able to make it out before firefighters arrived. No residents or firefighters were injured in the fire.

Six units were heavily damaged in the blaze.

Oklahoma City Fire Department Chief Cecil Clay said the cause of the fire could be suspicious considering the sheer size of the fire and the time of day when it started. He said fires typically don't start that late at night and grow so quickly when there are people awake and around.

"It looks like for the upper apartments its sustained heavy structural damage," said Clay. "They're not going to be inhabitable for quite a while."

Members of the Red Cross are helping the families try to find places to stay for the next couple days.

Firefighters do not have a dollar estimate yet on how much damage the fire caused.
