NORMAN, Oklahoma -- In the last two months, six people have died in house fires in Norman, and none of the homes had a working smoke detector. That's why Norman firefighters are working to keep residents safe.

The Norman Fire Department has a plan to give away 1,500 free smoke detectors to city residents next week.

"The fire department has partnered with the State Health Department to distribute smoke detectors through a grant program, And we'll be going out next Saturday, December 4 and actually knocking on doors in central Norman," said Norman Fire Chief James Fullingim

Any Norman resident can arrange to get one of the free smoke detectors by calling 405-292-9780.
