NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Disputes between neighbors are nothing new, but one Norman family said their neighbor's dog is a danger to the neighborhood.

Danny and Katherine Poling said they won't let their two children play in the backyard unsupervised because they're worried about what one of their neighbor's dogs across the fence might do.

"We're afraid to let our kids out in the backyard because we have a 1-year-old," said Danny Poling. "Slats and wood fences have enough gaps, they can stick their hand in there and that dog bites it."

The Polings cited a few incidents that have convinced them the dog is dangerous. They said one time the dog got out, chased after a jogger and knocked him down.

The dog's owner said he has resolved all issues with the jogger, and that his dog has never gotten out and attacked any of the Poling family. He said his dog is always supervised in the backyard and always on a leash when he goes out the front door.

The Polings said they have never asked police to come and to investigate. Norman police said they are handicapped in their work if people fail to report problems with dogs.

"Basically we rely, in situations like this, very much on the public's cooperation, their willingness to assist and tell us their side of the story," said Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley.

The dog's owner said he has hired a behavioral consultant to work with his dog.
