PONTOTOC COUNTY -- A single-car accident left one Ada teen dead and another injured Friday night in Pontotoc County. Troopers say Gerald Jewel, 17, was killed when the car he was riding in left the roadway and hit a tree at about 10 p.m. on State Highway 3W about five miles west of Ada.
Eighteen-year-old Jeffery Thomas Norton II was driving the 1994 Dodge Dakota pickup westbound on the highway. He passed another vehicle and lost control of the truck, swerving from the left side of the roadway to the right. The pickup struck a ditch, a fence and then a tree before coming to rest.
Norton was pinned for about 27 minutes before being freed by the Ada Fire Department. Jewel was pinned for almost three hours and was pronounced dead at the scene by Valley View EMS.
Norton was taken by medical helicopter to an Oklahoma City hospital. He was in serious condition with head, trunk and other injuries. Both teens were wearing seat belts.
The cause of the collision is listed as an inexperienced driver. Condition of the driver at the time of the accident is unknown, according to Trooper Rodney Davis.
