SHAWNEE, Oklahoma -- Admission to a Shawnee art museum is being waived in an effort to help homeless families.

A regional art exhibit is on display at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art in Shawnee until November 21, 2010. The exhibit's theme is A Promise Of Home and benefits an organization called Family Promise in Shawnee that helps homeless families.

Instead of admission, patrons are asked to bring an unused household paper or hygiene product for the group.

Thirty artists created pieces for the exhibit including children who have dealt with homelessness.

"It's my dream house because it's a two story house," Ivy McCray, a 14-year-old student who contributed to the art show.

McCray spent three months without a home this year.

"Nothing communicates the idea of home better to me than the drawing of a home by a child," said museum curator Donna Merkt.

"I wanted to make it really bright because I wanted it to look happy. Because it's happy when you get out of the program," McCray added about her painting and Family Promise.

The organization helped her father find work and the family is now supporting itself again. Learn more about the exhibit and Family Promise.
