Missing Midwest City Woman With Alzheimer's Found In Wrecked Vehicle

MIDWEST CITY, Oklahoma -- An 80-year-old Midwest City woman with Alzheimer's disease who went missing Tuesday was found alive in her wrecked car in a rural area of McIntosh County.

According to an Oklahoma Highway Patrol report on the accident, Shirley Cannon was traveling westbound on State Highway 52 when she somehow missed the left-hand curve in the road and drove off into a creek, hitting a large rock that caused the car to roll onto its roof.

The OHP says a man checking his mail in western McIntosh County saw the car in the creek Thursday morning at about 9 a.m. and called for help.  An Oklahoma State Wildlife Ranger was the first law enforcement officer on the scene.  He found Cannon still strapped into her seat belt.

Officials at the scene said Cannon had been in the car for at least eight hours.

Cannon was transported to a Henryetta hospital and then taken to a Tulsa hospital with internal and head injuries, where she is listed in stable condition.

"There is a strong likelihood because of where the car was, she could have gone for days without anyone finding her and at her age, probably would not have survived," Midwest City Chief Brandon Clabes said.

Clabes said the family told him Cannon is in the early stages of Alzheimer's and is still independent and lives alone.
