OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City police said a wheelchair-bound woman was hit and killed by a car a few blocks east of the state Capitol Wednesday night.

The woman was killed at 2500 N. Kelley Avenue about a block north of N.E. 23rd Street at about 9 p.m.

Family members said the victim was 35-year-old Christy Russell. Russell and her 15-year-old daughter lived in an apartment complex across the street from where she was killed.

Family members are taking her death very hard.

"Chirsty's a sweet person, sweet, loving mother and a caring person. She'd do anything for anybody before she'd do something for herself," said Christy's aunt Dana Russell.

Family members said the streets in the area are way too dark and believe the driver was likely speeding and didn't see the 35-year-old trying to cross the street.

Police have not released any further details about the cause of the accident.

Another wheelchair-bound woman was hit and killed by a motorist near N.E. 23rd Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard in early October. The driver involved in that incident did not receive any citations.

Many residents say the lack of sidewalks in the area led to the incident in October.
