OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma County District Attorney has charged a 16-year-old girl accused of lying about an attempted abduction. The teen faced a felony charge of filing a false police report.

Oklahoma City police said the 16-year-old claimed a man approached her Friday, Nov. 5, near McKinley Park at N.W. 10th Street and McKinley. She said the man tried to grab her and pull her into a car, but she managed to get away. The description she gave of the suspect matched that of the suspect involved in several abductions and sexual assaults in the area.

Police took the 16-year-old downtown to police headquarters. After interviewing her at length, they determined the teen was not telling the truth. Oklahoma City Police Spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow said false reports can hamper the investigation.

"In light of the recent investigation we've been doing, we have received a few of such instances, where we've had people coming forward to report something only to find out that it's not factual," said Sgt. Wardlow. "We obviously want to find out who this man is, locate him and take him into custody but we also take very seriously our investigators' time. We don't want people calling in false tips, only tips that they believe to be legitimate."
