OKLAHOMA CITY -- An Oklahoma Landmark known for its legendary barbeque has closed its doors. The County Line Barbeque Restaurant served its last meal Sunday night.

Brenda Harper, the restaurant's Director of Operations, broke the news to the staff Monday. Many of them have worked for the restaurant for 10 to 15 years.

"It's really hard," Harper said. "I've been here 20 years and hate to see this place close, but the owner decided he had no choice."

Harper said a combination of the recession and impending health care package caused the owner to close down the Oklahoma City location. The County Line Restaurants in Texas and New Mexico are all staying open.

"A lot of our big December parties last year canceled and some of our longtime business patrons did not book their Christmas parties either," Harper said. "We depend on those parties to get us through the slow months and this time we were not able to recover from the 'trickle down' effect."

Add to that an expensive upgrade to their computer system, a new paint job, and new roof on the annex, and the restaurants costs exceeded the money being brought in.

Harper and other staff members spent Monday fielding phone calls and questions from patrons who could not believe the restaurant was actually closed.

Harper also said the restaurant is for sale and she hopes someone local will buy it so they can continue the tradition.
