OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma Department of Human Services is once again offering help with home heating costs this winter for residents who qualify for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

Residents can begin applying for assistance Wednesday, December 1. Applications will be accepted until all funding in the program is spent.

The program is not available to everyone. Cari Crittenden, the coordinator of LIHEAP, said not all households that receive public assistance through OKDHS will be automatically authorized for the program. Those who are pre-approved will be notified in early November. Those who are not must apply for LIHEAP.

Crittenden said most other households that receive some type of public assistance, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, will be mailed LIHEAP applications. Low-income residents who do not receive any public assistance may also be eligible.

Eligibility for LIHEAP is based on household income and assets.
