EDMOND, Oklahoma – A young girl who went missing after her non-custodial mother allegedly took her from school has been found safe, according to Edmond police.

Police from Edmond, Oklahoma City and agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested 25-year-old Dominic Smith at about 3:30 a.m. at the Old London Town Apartments on N.W. 23rd Street. Edmond police spokesperson Glynda Chu said 8-year-old Dylana Smith was found safe at about 5:30 a.m. at a nearby residence.

Dylana was last seen arriving at Ida Freeman Elementary school Friday, October 15. The school had surveillance video of the little girl entering the school shortly after 8 a.m., but she never showed up for class. The video also showed a shadowy figure believed to be Dylana walking along the back wall of the gym towards a gym door. Dylana was being taken care of by a family friend because her mother did not have custody of her. Dominic had just been released from the Oklahoma County jail.

Police made contact with Dominic almost two weeks ago by phone when she told them she had her daughter and they were at a Target store in Norman. But, police did not locate them there.

Dylana is being interviewed and checked out, and will be taken to a shelter.

Dominic now faces child stealing charges.
