TULSA, Oklahoma -- A loaded horse trailer overturned early Saturday morning after a man fell asleep behind the wheel. The man was driving a Nissan Armada eastbound on Interstate 44 near 11th Street when he lost control of the vehicle and hit the horse trailer from behind.

The horse trailer broke free of its hitch and rolled multiple times before sliding to a stop on its side in the middle of the highway. The owner of the horses and friends in another vehicle rushed to free the injured animals.

Two of the three lanes of the highway were closed for a couple of hours while the vehicles were removed and the horses bandaged. All survived the wreck. They had multiple visible injuries, and the owners were concerned about the extent of the injuries that were not immediately visible.

One of the horses was a recent rescue.

Several people were treated at the scene for minor injuries, but none were taken to the hospital.

CORRECTION: NewsOn6.com originally reported that the Armada was pulling the horse trailer; however it was following behind the trailer when the accident occurred. The driver of the Armada was not known by the owners of the horses.

The horses were recovering well as of Sunday afternoon.
