My 2 Cents: NFL Cracking Down on Devastating Hits

OKLAHOMA CITY -- I haven't played football in a long time, but I can vividly remember the thrill of really lowering the boom on a running back, a receiver, or a quarterback. I'm not talking about a cheap shot, but a good teeth rattling tackle.

My intent was never to hurt someone or knock them out of the game, but I see that all the time in the NFL and to a lesser extent college football. The blindsides, the helmet to helmet collisions, defensive backs driving their helmets up under a receiver's chin, lineman and linebackers driving quarterbacks into the turf.

These guys have gotten so big and so fast, and the collisions are getting so violent someone is going to get killed. That's why I'm glad to see the NFL cracking down with fines and suspensions.

I truly believe a lot of these hits are malicious, intended to hurt the opponent and that's not the point of football. If you want to see that, check out Ultimate Fighting or something.

I'm for making some of the punishment immediate. If a linebacker levels an oblivious quarterback a couple of seconds after he's released a pass, bench him for the rest of the half or the game.

I like the hard hitting but spare me the thuggery.
