TULSA, Oklahoma -- Home made Chex-mix is one of those things that seems like its been around forever.

Who hasn't had some version of Chex Mix before? Coming up with something different was the challenge.

A local woman was one of a thousand entries in a contest to come up with a new variation and she was one of five winners.

Karen Fisher's a regular on those recipe websites, so when General Mills was looking for contestant in the Chex Mix Challenge, they contacted her.

"I got an email about General Mills having a Chex Mix contest… I thought it would be fun," Karen said.

She followed her son's suggestion to add some Cajun seasoning and make it spicy. She adds wheat, rice and corn Chex in a bowl along with pretzels and mixed nuts.

The recipe also calls for a half cup of olive oil, then the Cajun spice, plus a little hot sauce. Then whisk it up and drizzle it over the mix.

After you mix it up, it goes in the microwave for 6 minutes, stirring every couple of minutes; and that's it, pretty simple and quick. "So if somebody calls and says we're coming over… 15 minutes you got Chex mix..."

She submitted the recipe to General Mills and won in the salty category. There's also a savory sweet gluten free and chocolate category.

General Mills has set up a website visitors can vote on a favorite. You can get all the recipes at the web site too. Karen says for every vote the company will donate $2 to the Feeding America Fund.

Everyone can vote online for Karen once a day between now and mid December. If she wins, she gets $5,000.
