UNDATED -- A federal appeals court has upheld a $14.5 million judgment for poultry farmers in Southeast Oklahoma.
Crowe and Dunlevy, the Oklahoma law firm that represented the farmers, said in a statement Tuesday that the Tenth Circuit Court Of Appeals unanimously affirmed the judgment.
"We are extremely satisfied to see this legal battle end in a victory for our clients, supporting the jury's determination that OK Industries had mistreated Oklahoma farmers," said attorney Charles B. Goodwin, a director at Crowe & Dunlevy.
The ruling stems from a lawsuit filed in 2002 against OK Industries, Inc. The farmers had contracts to raise chickens for the company, located in Fort Smith, Arkansas. About 300 farmers accused OK Industries of using its "economic power as the only buyer in the area to manipulate, in its favor, what it paid the farmers."
A jury sided with the farmers in federal court in 2008, awarding them $21.1 million. A district judge reduced the amount to $14.5 million.
