OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City police said a man shot himself after police came to his apartment Tuesday afternoon to talk to him about a recent crime against a child in the city.

Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow with the Oklahoma City Police Department said Larry Kirby, 43, shot himself as officers approached the apartment near 3500 S. Harvey Avenue at about 2:10 p.m.

"As they were looking for this person who was the subject of the lead they wanted to talk to, they heard a gunshot go off from inside the structure," said Oklahoma City Police Captain Patrick Stewart.

Police said when they showed up to the apartment Tuesday, they only wanted to talk with Kirby about a recent crime involving a child. That crime made headlines across the metro and detectives said he had information relevant to the case. However police stopped short of calling Kirby a suspect.

"Again it appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and at this point no arrest has been made. There is not a warrant for this person. Again, it was juts a lead that came into our investigation detail, and they were out here to follow up on that lead," Stewart said.

Kirby was transported to the hospital after shooting himself in the face and was listed in critical condition Tuesday night.

Police are now going to the hospital to speak with Kirby about the recent crime.

Kirby is a three level lifetime registered sex offender and has previous criminal convictions including lewd acts with a child, sale of alcohol to a minor and second-degree burglary.

Police also called out several tow trucks to haul away several small grey vehicles that were all parked outside the residence. However, police have not stated why as of yet.
