OKLAHOMA CITY -- America's Promise Alliance (the Alliance) has honored Oklahoma City by naming it the winner of the Alliance's 100 Best Communities for Young People (100 Best) competition presented by ING.
Oklahoma City received the honor for the city's renewed focus on high-quality mentoring programs for inner-city youth after the United Way of Central Oklahoma issued a call-to-action. The call-to-action was answered and groups including David and Molly Boren Mentoring Matters Initiative, Devon Energy and INTEGRIS Health were cited as having brought a stronger volunteer mentor presence in the community.
"Oklahoma City is fortunate to have so many caring volunteers willing to invest their time mentoring to inner city youth," Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett said. "This investment will help reduce Oklahoma City's dropout rate, increase school attendance, raise students' expectation and put more young adults on the path to successful careers."
Its 2010 recognition marks the fourth win for Oklahoma City in the competition.
