OKLAHOMA CITY -- Jesus House board members have agreed to make changes to the financial structure of the struggling Oklahoma City homeless shelter.

Jesus House President and CEO Jan Mercer hosted a news conference following Thursday's board meeting.

"What has been in the media is a good thing because it's brought whatever our weaknesses are to light so we can fix them," Mercer said.

Mercer said the board voted to make significant changes to the way finances are being handled at the organization. The changes will include adjustments to salaries including Mercer's six-figure salary that has come under scrutiny.

"There's a perception that I probably made more money than I should have, and if that's the case it's going to be corrected," Mercer said.

Other changes approved by the board include computer software will finally be used to keep track of financial records and documents, a repayment plan is being created to take care of outstanding loans and debts and salaries will be adjusted.

"Our financial accountability is probably in the 19th century, OK. We grew faster than we were able to keep up with," Mercer said. "I'm sure God will sustain us. I mean, we pray every day."

The organization is also applying for a grant that will help pay for an accountant and financial software.

"We have never misused funds," Mercer said. "However, changes will be made and regardless of what anyone thinks of me or my salary, we have 80 people in this building who need shelter, food and water and with winter approaching, we'll have many more who will need our help."
