OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office is mourning the death of Reserve Deputy John Hofegartner, who died Saturday, September 11 after a battle with cancer.

Hofegartner served the citizens of Oklahoma County as a reserve and clerical employee for 17 years.

Sheriff John Whetsel said "John was always ready to serve and will most notably be remembered for his courageous and bold action when he ended an escape attempt by three inmates who had taken employees hostage and were trying to escape through the front door."

That attempted jail escape happened in May 2007, but Hofegartner quickly put an end to the attempt when he held the suspects at gunpoint.

The OSCO said the volunteer reserve deputy will be missed greatly and their thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.
