TULSA, OKLAHOMA -- As we approach flu season, doctors are calling for mandatory flu shots for all doctors, nurses and health care workers.

A national pharmacy chain says the sooner the better when it comes to getting your vaccine.

If you can, you should get that taken care of right away. But is the preventative shot the best way to go?

The News On 6 checked with the Tulsa City-County Health Department to find out what's the best thing to do.

In Oklahoma, we're told historically the peak time for flu season is during the month of January. Some locations offer the vaccine as early as September.

Normally the Tulsa County Health Department gives flu vaccines starting in October. This year, the Tulsa County Health Department will be administering the vaccine starting October 4th and that's in about three weeks.

Flu season can run until March and some flu cases can pop up in April or even May. The News On 6 asked if the flu shot could be dangerous to certain groups of people.

"It's not dangerous for any age group. There are certain people that can't take it because of allergies they might have or some medical condition. I think everyone's heard of that one, it's a condition that affects the nervous system," said Janice Sheehan with the Tulsa County Health Department.

In cases like that you would be referred to your private physician because the doctor would know your health history better and know if you may have health complications down the road.

This year for the first time the health department will be charging. There will be a $25 fee for the shot, however there are a few people that are exempt. Children that fall under the vaccine for children's program and if you are on Medicare but don't have any supplemental insurance.

If you have any questions about whether you qualify for the free shots you can contact the Tulsa County Health Department at 918-582-9355.
