Gracemont Makes History with First Home Football Game

GRACEMONT, Oklahoma -- Hundreds were in Gracemont Friday night to witness the school's first ever home football game.

For folks in Gracemont, Friday night was a night of many firsts, including the town's first ever traffic jam. A sure sign that something big was happening.

"Our big deal is the first home football game ever in the history of Gracemont school," said Roberta Fullbright, Gracemont Elementary Principal.

Several hundred huddled together on the school's baseball field to witness the historic football game.

A lot of donations, a lot of volunteer coaching and an entire town pulling together is why football fans finally have something to cheer about.

"This town has really a rich history in sports and there's been a lot of kids go through here that would have loved to have the opportunity to play football," said Ron Cunningham, Gracemont High alumni.

There is now that opportunity, thanks to everyone pitching in from the national anthem to the concession stands.

"We just said a moment ago, we hope someone is watching our house because there is nobody watching the houses while we are all over here. This is the place to be tonight. Everybody who is in Gracemont knows about it and we've all been excited and waiting on this day," said Donna Bridges, Gracemont Resident.

Gracemont lost Friday night's game, but in the grand scheme of things, the team and town wrapped up the night with a huge victory in the history books.

The team's next home game is October 22 for the first football homecoming.
