CASHION, Oklahoma -- Southwest Logan County and southeast Kingfisher County are under a drinking water warning due to high levels of nitrate.

Water samples received September 3 showed nitrate levels above the maximum contaminate level of 10 mg/l. Nitrate in drinking water is a serious health concern of infants less than six months old.

The Logan County Water District #2 said resident should not give the water to infants under 6 months old. Infants under 6 months cannot process nitrates properly and could become seriously ill. Water, juice and formula for children under 6 months should also not be prepared with tap water.

Boiling, freezing, filtering and letting the water stand will not reduce nitrate levels. Boiling the water could make the nitrates more concentrated.

Adults and children older than 6 months can drink the tap water. However, if you are pregnant or have specific health concerns, you may want to consult your doctor.

This system serves areas of southwest Logan county and southeast Kingfisher county, including the town of Cashion and Cedar Valley Golf Course.

Officials say actions are being taken to lower nitrate levels. The water district is also in the process of completing new wells, a tower and chlorination station with low nitrate water.
