A large grassfire east of Newalla along S. Pottawatomie County Road forced area residents to evacuate.

NEWALLA, Oklahoma – A large grassfire east of Newalla along S. Pottawatomie County Road forced area residents to evacuate.

Deputies with the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office helped alert people to evacuate the area just north of 5201 S. Pottawatomie County Road.

The grassfire began at about 12:30 p.m. Newalla, Choctaw and Harrah volunteer fire departments helped put the fire out.

Initially, three acres burned but wind spread the flames, leaving five acres charred before the blaze was under control. The fire damaged a barn.

No injuries were reported.

It is unclear what caused the fire.
