OKLAHOMA CITY -- It's a critical weekend for artists showing off their work at the 32nd annual Arts Festival Oklahoma. For many of the artists, events like the festival can be the difference in turning a profit or not.
For artists it's all about having the opportunity to showcase their work and the art festival is just one more way for them to do that. Plus, if all goes well, not only will the artists be able to get their name out to the public, but hopefully make a sale in the process.
One reason why the Arts Festival is considered a must stop for artists is because of the crowd it draws. In 2007, it's estimated some 22,000 people attended the festival and this year, officials say, is no different.
"Our attendance is up in just the first day," says Lemuel Bardeguez one of the festival's organizers.
One of the biggest draws is Fred Conlon's booth. Conlon is one of 140 plus artists at the festival competing for your business. Conlon uses old war items, like an old army helmet, and uses it for inspiration for his recycled metal art. Conlon says Arts Festival Oklahoma is key for showcasing his work.
"When I have a place where I can light up the torches, you know, have a couple full size skeletons over there, and that really draws the crowd in," said Conlon. "I figure I've had success if someone comes by the booth and laughs or smiles, I'm halfway there. The other half comes when they want to take it home with them."
Just to get an idea of how vital the festival is for artists like Conlon, he says his art is what puts food on the table, not just for him but his four children.
