NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Norman police are investigating a stabbing involving two Norman High School students, which the victim's family said was the result of bullying.

Officers responded to a call about a male bleeding in a car near the Sooner Theater in the 100 block of East Main Street. When officials arrived, they could not locate the victim. Shortly after, Norman police received another call about a stabbing in the 900 block of West Main, across from Norman High School.

School authorities said the victim reported the stabbing and provided the suspect's name to school police. School authorities detained the suspect at the high school, after he came back onto school property. He was turned over to Norman police.

The 16-year-old victim drove himself to Norman Regional Hospital.

A fight between the two Norman High School students was what ended with one of them getting stabbed.

The incident happened while the students were in the middle of their lunch break. It is an incident the victim's family said could easily have been prevented.

The victim's family said the incident has to do with an ongoing bullying problem. They say they tried notifying the high school but nothing was being done.

They say their youngest son had been bullied by the suspect for quite some time when Wednesday at lunch their other son confronted the suspect asking him to stop bullying his younger brother. That is when the victim's family said the suspect, who police are only identifying as a 15-year-old Norman High School student, stabbed their older son.

The family said the victim's injuries are not life-threatening and he could be out of the hospital soon.

The suspect remains in police custody. Neither name has been released in the incident.

Norman School Superintendent Joe Siano said the school will cooperate with the police department. Siano said they don't tolerate any weapons on campus and they're launching an internal investigation.
