NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Some students at the University of Oklahoma may have to buy permits to park at Lloyd Noble this year.

In years past, parking in the Lloyd Noble parking lot has been free for students, but in an effort to keep parking costs down for all students at the university, OU Parking Services has decided to required parking passes for most areas in the lot.

"We are trying not increase costs on permits. We haven't increased costs in six years. We felt like we needed to require permits there to keep that from happening," said Vicky Holland, OU Parking Services spokesperson.

About 1,200 spots on the north side of Lloyd Noble will remain free to students who want to ride the bus into campus. The department originally only had 600 free spots available to students, but on Wednesday OU President David Boren asked that the number of spots be doubled.

Holland said the tickets will not be issued until signs are put up designating the areas.

"If you don't see a sign there won't be tickets," Holland said.

Student parking permits are $195 for the year. Violations for not displaying a permit in the designated areas at Lloyd Noble will cost $25.
