OKLAHOMA CITY -- After receiving seven heat-related calls Monday afternoon, EMSA issued the fifth heat alert of the summer.
A heat alert is issued if EMSA receives five or more heat-related calls in a 24 hour period.
NEWS 9 meteorologists are predicting the triple-digit heat to stick around for a good portion of the week. The heat alert will remain in place until temperatures drop significantly.
All of the patients from the heat-related calls were transported to metro hospitals in good condition.
Emergency officials offer the following tips to stay safe in the extreme heat:
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Wear light-colored clothing. It's believed wearing dark colors could add another 5 degrees.
- Take time out in the shade to cool off
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:
- Being dizzy, tired or weak
- Fainting spells
- Getting flushed
- Heavy sweating
- Fast heartbeat
Paramedics recommend calling 911 if these systems persist for about an hour after someone moves into a cool place.
