OKLAHOMA CITY – Republicans James Lankford and Kevin Calvey will meet in an Aug. 24 primary runoff election for U.S. House District 5, which represents Oklahoma City.

Neither candidate received the majority of votes needed to win their party's nomination in a crowded field which included Mike Thompson, Harry Johnson, Rick Flanigan, Johnny Roy and Shane Jett.

"Our country is in deep trouble. The amount of spending and debt being incurred by our government is bankrupting our country, and is causing us to lose our nation's bond rating. And we still face grave threats from terrorism around the world. When I returned from being deployed to Iraq, I did not think I would get involved in running for public office again. But I am so alarmed at the direction our country is taking that I cannot stand idly by and watch the current leadership destroy our country. I have a calling to run for Congress, just as I was called to serve our country in Iraq," said Calvey, who was an Oklahoma State Representative from 1996-2006.

"I am a strong Conservative voice with real-world leadership and business experience which includes hiring and managing a large staff, balancing a budget and working long hours. I am committed to ethics and reform and have received the endorsements of J.C. Watts and Governor Mike Huckabee. I want to bring down our national debt, limit the role of the federal government and serve Oklahoma families with integrity. Now is not the time to send a career politician seeking their "next office;" now is the time to send a new Conservative voice who will go to work protecting our Constitution and our families," Lankford said.

Billy Coyle is the Democratic nominee for U.S. House District 5.

Coyle and the winner of the Republican primary runoff election will face Independent candidates Clark Duffe and Dave White in the November 2 general election.
