OKLAHOMA CITY -- The desire to stay cool during the scorching, hot weather can come with a high price -- electric bills that some Oklahomans can't afford, but one state agency is working to ensure all Oklahomans can afford to beat the heat.

Last summer, Sharon Hill was hoping to get relief from not only the heat, but also her high electric bill. Hill was among those applying for help through the state's Summer Cooling Program.

"It's quite popular. Last year we were given about $17 million, and we helped almost 85,000 households pay their electric bill last year," said Lauri Monetti, Department Of Human Services spokesperson.

Monetti said once again this year, the state has federal funds to give to those who are struggling to pay for their air conditioning.

"This year we were allocated about $18 million, and we anticipate using all of that," Monetti said.

The money is given out on a first come, first serve basis to those who meet the income requirements.

"There are so many people who are struggling and are in need of help, especially during this time of year when it's hot, so that's why it's necessary for our program to be there," Monetti said.

Oklahomans can begin applying next Monday.

"They need to make sure to bring a valid identification with them, their most recent electric bill, and also verification of income of themselves and anyone else who lives in the house with them," Monetti said.
