Yukon Man Pays Price in Jail After Stealing 55 Cents

YUKON, Oklahoma – A Yukon man has been arrested for taking two quarters and a nickel from the center console of a car parked at an apartment complex.

According to police, Tyler Walker Challis was seen by a woman getting into her car when she was leaving her apartment. The woman approached Challis and he told her he was returning some CDs he had borrowed from a friend. Challis fled, but was later identified by witnesses as he also lived in the apartment complex.

"I don't want to live somewhere where I have to be scared. I have to look out my window and wonder if my car is broken into. I lived here two years and my car's been broken into three times," said victim Nancy McHenry. "I mean randomly picking someone's car to get into and we live in the same apartment complex, is it worth it?"

Yukon police said Challis admitted to carrying CD's around as an alibi, pretending to return them to a friend's car to break into his neighbor's vehicle. He also admitted to taking the 55 cents.

But McHenry, who's pressing charges, said he took off with more than spare change. She said there was probably $20 worth of change in the console and Challis got all of that except 50 cents.

"I still feel bad that the kid went to jail but you can't just break into somebody's car," McHenry said. "I don't care if it's for a penny, you can't just violate our space."

Challis was booked into the Yukon city jail where he faces a second-degree burglary charge.
