NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Norman Regional Health System is recycling the sterile, disposable pads used to wrap surgical instruments.

Instead of throwing them out, from now on the trash will go to the animal shelter in Moore. The pads will be used as lining for cages, replacing the newspapers the shelter currently uses.

"They're currently just using plain newspaper for the animas to sleep on, and they are going to use this as a bedding material because it's a lot more clean, absorbent and it won't shred like the newspaper they're using," Julie Robberson with the Moore Medical Center said.

Since the pads won't tear, it should be easier for shelter workers to clean up.

There is no report yet on how the dogs and cats like the new bedding.
