Safe Kids Oklahoma Uses Education to Prevent Drowning

NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Safe Kids Oklahoma is aiming through education and other means to prevent drownings involving children.

Safe Kids Oklahoma has distributed 2,000 life vests to fourteen lakes in Oklahoma.

Lake Thunderbird Superintendent Terry Gibson said the free vests are appreciated, since the Norman lake couldn't otherwise afford them.

But when it comes to the danger of children being swept away by fast-moving water, Safe Kids Oklahoma Executive Director John Wilguess said there's no substitute for adult supervision.

"It is an attractive hazard," Wilguess said. "But it is one of those things that parents just have to be serious about."
