OKLAHOMA CITY -- As Oklahomans begin their Independence Day celebrations, Don Schulenberg serves as a reminder to thank those who serve to give us that freedom.

Schulenberg is volunteering to protect the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall that's visiting Norman this weekend. It's the only place he said he wants to be.

Schulenberg is a Vietnam veteran who served the army for 20 years, but his service never stopped.

"This is, it's the greatest, the greatest day of my life in a long time. Since I left Vietnam in '71. This is it," Schulenberg said.

That's because the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall is in Norman as the backdrop to the Cleveland County Veterans Memorial, which Schulenberg spent eight long years working for.

"Nickels, dimes, quarters. I didn't care. Whatever you gave I took and thanked you and took it home," he said.

That perseverance led to a memorial that Schulenberg said finally recognizes those who served in Cleveland County.

"As long as I'm alive, veterans in Cleveland County will know me and know what I stand for," Schulenberg said.

He spends most of his time at the American Legion helping other veterans get the benefits they are entitled to. He said to watch citizens honor Cleveland County veterans and Vietnam veterans at the same time has been a huge wish of his.

"Our veterans gave us our freedom. They gave us our freedom, and a lot of youngsters don't know that. They take it for granted. I wish they wouldn't," Schulenberg said through tears.

He said all Americans need to do their part by making sure to thank veterans.

"We like to hear it. Say thank you. It's America. Let's keep it free," he said.

The Cleveland County Veterans Memorial has several thousand names already, but has space for many more.
