EDMOND, Oklahoma -- Local libraries are packed with metro families trying to beat the heat and keep their children busy.

Since the first day of the summer reading program started on June 1st, the Edmond branch of the Metropolitan Library System has been very busy. More than 4,000 children have enrolled into the program.

"We want to be more of a community center, not just a place where they do their homework after school," said Angela Thornton, Manager of Library Operations in Edmond. "We had over 10,000 circulations the first day the program started and even though we're the busiest library in the system, that's still an impressive number for us."

The library also offers a variety of entertainment including music, chess club and story time.

"The program includes prizes for the number of books a child reads and that's been very popular," Thornton added.
