OKLAHOMA CITY – The Salvation Army and OG&E are teaming up to give away free box fans to qualified seniors, families and people with disabilities.

OG&E donated 200 additional fans to help with the giveaway. The fans will be given to qualified senior citizens, families with infants under 6 months old and the disabled and chronically ill.

Evelane Sherfield was glad to get one. "I need a fan 'cause my central air went out," Sherfield said.

"Right now with the temperatures getting at deadly high temperatures, it is very important for the seniors and the disabled and those with infants under six months of age to have fans in their homes," said Ashley Jones with the Salvation Army.

But fans can also help seniors save money on their electric bill.

"This will allow folks to turn up the air a few degrees, keep air moving, and still feel comfortable in their homes," said Brian Alford with OG&E.

And with temperatures soaring, seniors are finding additional ways to beat the heat like local community centers. About 200 seniors come to the Midwest City Community Center every day for food, fellowship, and to enjoy the air conditioning. Richard Buss comes five days a week.

"It's nice and cool in here," Buss said.

If you need a fan and qualify, they will be distributed form 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Salvation Army's Emergency Food Pantry located at 330 S.W. 4th St. Call (405) 246-1100 for details.

The Salvation Army Central Oklahoma Area Command, at the same address, also provides a cooling station when temperatures reach more than 100 degrees.
