Through June 13 Objects of Devotion: Spanish Colonial Religious Art 1650-1950

Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, Shawnee

Info: From the seventeenth century on, Spanish friars in New Mexico imported religious sculptures and paintings from Europe and Mexico to adorn newly built mission churches. By the second half of the eighteenth century, several New Mexican artists were transforming native woods and other materials into bultos, retablos, hide paintings and more in a local version of the Baroque style. The exhibition examines 300 years of this traditional, but nearly forgotten, art form.

Info: Alfonso Ossorio: Gifts from the Ossorio Foundation displays eleven works created by the artist between 1949 and 1984. The exhibit includes eight ink, wax, and watercolor paintings, a collage, and an etching, as well as the major assemblage piece, INXIT. The works were donated to the Museum by the Ossorio Foundation in 2008.

Through July 11 The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States

Oklahoma City Museum of Art, Oklahoma City

Info: Over the course of more than forty years, New York collectors Dorothy and Herbert Vogel amassed one of the most significant collections of contemporary art in the United States. The couple began collecting after their marriage in 1962. Dorothy's income as a librarian paid expenses while Herb's salary as a postal officer was reserved for their collecting endeavors. The Vogels frequented New York galleries and purchased works that could be stored in their modest one-bedroom apartment.

Through Sept. 12 Wanderlust: Travel and American Photography

Info: Since the early 20th century, travel has been an important part of the American experience, especially the family vacations and road trips synonymous with summer vacations. Wanderlust: Travel and American Photography examines the role American highways and interstates have played in the migratory desires of the American people. The exhibition includes photographs from Berenice Abbott's photo essay of Route 1; the 1981 American Roads portfolio, complied by Victor Landweber; and Dennis Stock's James Dean: A Memorial Portfolio, which documents the actor's final visits to his homes in Indiana and New York.
