NORMAN, Oklahoma -- A state senator from Norman is running for a district judge position that covers Cleveland, McClain and Garvin counties.

Republican Jonathan Nichols was elected to the Oklahoma Senate in 2000 and will be forced out of office in 2012 because of term limits.

A former prosecutor, Nichols is seeking to replace Judge Rodney Ring, who served as a special judge in Cleveland County for 20 years before his recent appointment to the district judge seat.

Ring was appointed by Oklahoma Supreme Court Chief Justice James Edmondson to replace longtime former District Judge Bill Hetherington, who was named to the Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals last year.

The nonpartisan election will be held in July.
