OKLAHOMA CITY -- The state's crackdown on unscrupulous roofers has started. A bill that would require roofers to register with the state has overwhelmingly passed both the Senate and House and is now on the way to the governor's desk.

This is a huge step towards protecting consumers. If this legislation becomes law, roofers would be required to register which means they'd have to prove they have insurance.

"Especially in light of storms, we absolutely needed to get something into the public's hands so they can find who's legitimate and who's not legitimate," said Sen. Dan Newberry.

If a consumer has a problem with a roofer, they can file a complaint with the state's Construction Industries Board, which would have the ability to fine the roofer and eventually take away their state registration. Unregistered roofers would face a misdemeaner on $500 fine.

NEWS 9's Consumer Watch team supported the bill from the start and Amanda Taylor even wrote every lawmaker to let them know.

"I applaud her efforts and everyone who contacted the legislature to help make this pass," Sen. Newberry.

As long as the governor signs it, it will become law in November. His staff said he supports tougher restrictions on the industry.
