SHAWNEE, Oklahoma -- Shawnee police said a man who barricaded himself inside a garage during a standoff has died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police Chief Russell Frantz said officers responded to a call about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday of shots being fired at a home near Dewey and Chapman. When they arrived, the man, identified as James Lawrence Shockley, 71, was barricaded in a detached garage near the residence.

Frantz said shots were fired while police were on the scene but he didn't think they were aimed at officers.

The chief said when communications broke down between Shockley and police, tactical officers launched tear gas into the window of the garage. Sgt. Mason Wilson said officers heard a gunshot, then saw no movement.

About noon, officers moved in and found Shockley dead.
