SHAWNEE, Oklahoma -- A 4-year-old boy who was hit by a car Tuesday in Shawnee has been declared brain dead and is currently on life support, according to hospital officials.

Doctors said Cobie Wright will remain on life support until they are able to harvest his organs.

Police said they found Cobie critically injured and lying in a neighborhood street in the 600 block of N. Dorothy Avenue just south of the Shawnee airport. Police said they also found an SUV pulled off on the side of the road.

The 77-year-old driver of the SUV requested an attorney Tuesday and was set to be interviewed by police about the incident on Wednesday.

Shawnee police originally reported Cobie had died at the scene but later learned he was flown by medical helicopter to OU Medical Center. However, Cobie's family said the toddler died at the hospital Wednesday

Investigators have not confirmed if the SUV was involved in the incident, but the car was towed away from the scene.

Police said they have no witnesses at this time. Neighbors did say they saw the boy laying in the street shortly after the incident. Police said they are now asking for any witnesses to come forward.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol was called to assist in the investigation.

No arrests have been made and no charges have been filed in the case.

A fund has been set up on behalf of Cobie Wright to help the family with medical expenses. Donations can be made at any BancFirst location.
