MIAMI, OK -- A Miami Police officer is in a Joplin, Missouri hospital after trading gunfire with a man Tuesday evening in the Ottawa County community.

The incident took place at about 8:30 p.m. after officers responded to a report of a husband-wife domestic disturbance at the Chisholm Trail Apartments in the 200 block of Kanady Avenue in Miami.

Miami Police say Officer Mike Brashears, 38, fired his gun at 38-year-old Kevin Brownfield after Brownfield walked out on a balconey and pointed a shotgun at the officer.

Officer Brashears' shot hit Brownfield in the abdomen.  Brownfield did fire his shotgun, striking Brashers in the hip.

Both were taken by medical helicopters to a Joplin hospital. The officer is listed in good condition and Brownfield is listed in serious condition at the same hospital.

Brashers is a five year veteran of the Miami Police Department.  Brashers along with four Miami Police officers at the scene have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and Ottawa County Sheriff's Office are assisting in the investigation.
