LANGSTON, Oklahoma -- Langston University stands to gain from the new health care law.

The law sets aside $2.5 billion for the country's historically black college and universities.

Langston was aware of the earmark before the bill passed. Langston administrators said they are thrilled about the possibility of getting the federal money and plan to use the funds on graduate programs.

Some of the money would be directed to its physical therapy program, which is made up of graduate students working on their doctorate degrees. The program is one of the best in the state.

"In our physical therapy program, we have 100 percent of our students who graduate and 100 percent of them pass the national exam," said Charles King, Langston University administrator.

In the health care law, the money is designated to be used in areas straightening black colleges, universities and institutions, graduate programs, grants and capital financing.

"It will help us be able to get more students, not just more students; it will help people be able to get in," said James Iverson, a Langston University student.

But actually getting their hands on the money will be a challenge. There are about 150 historically black colleges and universities in the country, so Langston will have to compete against some of the larger schools for a cut.

"I'm certainly not hanging my hat on getting that money, and we are doing everything we can to secure grants and funds from foundations and resources to be able to do the programs and education that we want to offer her at Langston," said Milagros Jorge, Dean of the Langston School of Physical Therapy

The University is still waiting for guidelines on how to apply for the money.
