OKLAHOMA CITY -- Less than 24 hours ago, the future looked bleak for the daughters of a woman who has been fighting for her life after being set on fire earlier this week.

On Thursday Laura Miller's family said the Department of Human Services threatened to take Miller's three daughters into custody because the family member who was taking care of the girls could not provide adequate housing.

The family, however, was told Friday that DHS is now working with them to help find a new home so the children will not be taken into DHS custody. Meanwhile, members of the community are stepping up to help Miller and her three young girls.

The father of Miller's children, George Rodriguez, is accused of dousing her in gasoline before setting her on fire Tuesday afternoon. Police said George Rodriguez forced his way into Miller's home with their three daughters inside and, after an argument, set her on fire.

"It just touched my heart and I just wanted to come and give a donation to the family," said Elaine Adkins, who donated to the Laura Miller Fund.

Many people like Adkins gave financial donations to the Miller family, while others dropped off clothing and food at Crossroads Church on South Shields, where Miller's brother attends church.

"The first thing you ask is, what can you do in a practical way to help a family in a crisis like this?" said Crossroads Church Pastor Gary Bohanon.

Bohanon said he isn't surprised by the outpouring of support financial or otherwise, but he said he is struggling to understand the motivation for such a brutal attack.

"The initial reaction is how can one person do something like that to another person?" Bohanon said.

Bohanon said he believes the community pulling together is proof of a higher power at work.

"It's the age old battle of good versus evil, and evil set this woman on fire, but good is lining up to say what can we do to help?" Bohanon said.

A local bank recently donated $1,000 to Laura Miller's fund.

Miller remains in critical condition at the Integris Baptist Burn Center with third-degree burns on more than 30 percent of her body.
