OKLAHOMA CITY – For one pregnant Oklahoma City mother the hospital was a little too far away and her newborn son was a little too anxious to be born. Last Wednesday, Susie Herrera started having contractions just minutes apart and insisted to her husband they wouldn't make it to the hospital.
EMSA paramedics arrived at her home and in the ambulance on the way to the hospital Frederick was born.
"I'm always worried about something happening, something for the worst. But I don't know, it was just crazy," Herrera said.
"It was scary and joyful at the same time. When the kid came out, you feel something in your heart that you don't feel on most calls, because a lot don't go well. This one was the perfect call I could have had," said paramedic Brian Short.
Frederick is Susie Herrera's fifth child but she said it was her first in an ambulance.
"It was amazing just seeing him come out. It was real quick. All it took was one push and he was out," Herrera said.
"It's exciting to see a new mom with her new baby and know that I had a little part in that especially in the back of the ambulance," Short said.
This was the first time paramedic Brian Short had delivered a baby.
