OKLAHOMA CITY – A detention officer with the Oklahoma County Detention Center has been arrested and fired.

Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel released a statement today that a confidential informant said Officer Okello Adenya, 25, was allegedly providing contraband to inmates on the 12th floor over a two month period of January and February of 2010.

Following an internal investigation and a routine search, officers recovered tobacco, marijuana and a cell phone charger that verified the allegations against Adenya.

Sheriff Whetsel said he conducted an interview with Adenya on March 4 where he admitted providing the contraband to the inmates. Adenya told Whetsel individuals outside of the jail would provide him with contraband, and he accepted bribes totaling to about $1,100 to give the items to inmates.

Adenya was subsequently fired and booked into jail on three felony counts of bringing and possessing contraband in a penal institution.

Whetsel said the investigation in ongoing and more arrests are expected.

"On behalf of the dedicated and honest men and women of the Sheriff's Office, I hope our citizens will continue to trust that the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office maintains a professional atmosphere where this sort of activity will never be tolerated and where we will live up to our motto – Pride is who we are and Professionalism is what we do," Sheriff Whetsel said in the statement.
