OKLAHOMA CITY -- A 7th grader at Mayfield Middle School was honored as a hero Monday for helping save his fellow classmate who was choking.
The incident happened last week when Tekail Davis choked on a piece of butterscotch candy.
"He put the piece of candy in his mouth and we were talking then got up to talk to someone else. Then I just seen him, you know hold his throat, and I said ‘Tekail, are you ok?' But I knew he wasn't, so I just got up behind him and started doing the Heimlich," Rodre Jackson said.
Jackson had learned the Heimlich maneuver from this 6th grade math teacher.
"I just really felt weird. I was like uh oh, what happens, what's going on? What should I do? And I just remembered in the back of my head, Heimlich maneuver," the 7th grader said.
Jackson said it was the first time he has ever had to perform the Heimlich maneuver. He encourages other students to learn the maneuver because he said you never know when you may have to use it.
