Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett Re-Elected for Third Term

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett has won a third term as mayor with 58.3 percent of the vote.

Cornett defeated his opponent Steve Hunt by about 4,000 votes. Cornett received 58.3 percent (14,073) of the vote while Hunt received 41.7 percent (10,061).

"I wasn't sure what to expect. I knew historically third terms are extremely hard to win. I'm just thrilled voters have given me another opportunity to lead," Cornett said.

Continuing to lead Oklahoma City's renaissance known as MAPS 3 is what Cornett said he will keep the focus on.

Instead of a watch party, Cornett kept tabs on the numbers via phone at Tuesday night's Thunder game at the Ford Center.

"Three or four month ago when I was looking at the Thunder schedule, I saw March 2, I knew that stuck in my mind for some reason. Sure enough, it was election day. Every time someone brought up a watch party I said, 'I'm going to the Thunder game,'" Cornett said.

Mayor Cornett was considered as a possible contender to run for the seat vacated by Congresswoman Mary Fallin as she runs for governor, but Cornett said Wednesday his only plans are to run for mayor.

"Lisa and I are certainly aware that there are other political opportunities but we don't intend to consider them," said Cornett. "I expect the next four years in Oklahoma City to be pretty spectacular, and I want to be a part of it. Let me be as emphatic as necessary - I am not going to run for Governor, or Lt. Governor or Congress. I am running for re-election as mayor. We are creating a world-class city and there is much more work to accomplish."

Cornett was elected mayor in 2004 with 57 percent of the vote in a special election against three opponents, and re-elected in 2006 with 87 percent of the vote against two opponents.
