PURCELL, Oklahoma -- These are tough times for public schools as money is tight and some probably feel like the roof is caving in on them. That's not much of an exaggeration in Purcell, but school officials are hoping to change that with a proposed school bond.

When it rains, it pours. When it rains at Purcell schools, it leaks. The junior high building's flat roofs are old, they leak, and officials say they can't be patched up anymore.

"We've got trash cans sitting during class with water dripping out of them, we have ceiling tiles that actually fall during class, so it's kind of disruptive," Purcell Junior High School President Brad Petty said.

In the computer room, leaks are a big worry. That's why plastic covers sit nearby.

"We take the plastic and we just make sure that the plants in the back are covered up, that way when the water comes through the roof it doesn't get into the monitor or the actual keyboard itself," teacher Jamie Roberts said.

On Tuesday Purcell citizens will vote on a $3.8 million bond issue designed to provide a permanent fix for the leaks at three schools. It will also provide a new physical education building at the middle school. And it will replace some heating and cooling units. On the eve of the vote, the superintendent sounds confident.

"I think the public will be in favor of this because they do see the need, we just hope that there's a good turnout," Purcell Superintendent Dr. Tony Christian said.

Purcell is not the only school bond issue being voted on Tuesday. Kingfisher is asking voters to approve a $6 million bond issue to renovate the middle school building and to build a new parking lot. And voters in Dale will consider a $2.5 million bond issue to build a cafeteria, classrooms and a ventilation system for the gymnasium.
