Momentum in Midtown Grows With New Renovations

OKLAHOMA CITY -- There is a renaissance going on in the heart of Oklahoma City where changes are picking up speed in Midtown.

The latest transformation included new housing options.

"Since 2006, we've purchased about 30 different properties around Midtown. If you drive down the street, you might not think much is going on, but a lot is going on behind the scenes," Midtown Renaissance President Mickey Clagg said.

Renovations are now complete for three residential buildings at NW12th street and Francis Avenue. The buildings each house sets of apartments that are now available for lease.

Just a few years ago, the properties were blighted. Now, each of them is outfitted with modern appliances and different design styles.

"It brings a lot of gratification to see a project come to fruition," Clagg said.

Mark Krittenbrink is the lead architect hired by Midtown Renaissance.

"Midtown is absolutely charming. These apartments we have now were abandoned and boarded up buildings when we started this project. It's an exciting process to go through," Krittenbrink said.

Krittenbrink believes changes will happen so fast that Oklahomans will not recognize the Midtown areas five years from now.

"It's like Bricktown. Bricktown started with just one or two buildings. As people start to live in Midtown, it will be a domino effect for our development," said Krittenbrink.

Midtown Renaissance's new Midtown apartments start at $950 a month.

The group is responsible for the Plaza Court renovation at NW 10th and Walker. They are also working on other office and retail buildings. A new Italian restaurant is set to open at one of their buildings near Plaza Court in the spring.
